Soldiers kept patrolling the Rocinha slum in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday where new shootouts erupted early in the morning.

The government deployed the Brazilian army in Rio's largest slum on Friday afternoon after the violence forced authorities to shut roads, close schools and health units and isolate the area for a few hours.

The defence ministry said as many as 950 troops were deployed around the perimeter of Rocinha, where some of the most intense battles took place.

The troops would provide backup so that military police, including elite squads of commandos, could go after traffickers in the hills that make up the sprawling community in the city's south, defense ministry spokesman Raul Jungmann said.

The operation comes just as the city is hosting the Rock in Rio festival, featuring concerts by groups such as Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Military police, tasked with patrolling and going after suspects, had been doing operations in Rocinha since Monday.

The intensity of the firefights - gunshots are often heard in Rio - increased on Friday and erupted in other neighbourhoods, including Alemao, Dona Marta, Vila Kennedy and Chapeu Mangueira.

Several gangs are fighting for predominance in Rocinha and violence also is fed by armed militias of former police and military personnel that sometimes take security into their own hands.

About 8,500 troops were deployed in August to try to curb rising violence a year after Rio hosted the Summer Olympics.

However, the troops have mostly been patrolling, not engaging with traffickers.

Leaked police body cam footage shows a recent moment in which Mexican officers were ambushed by a cartel attack.

The ambush occurred in the Mexican border state of Chihuahua. While the cartel caught the police off guard, officers were quickly able to fire back, shooting with assault rifles and using their vehicles for cover.

It's unclear which branch of the cartel staged the ambush, but these shootouts are not unusual in Mexico. More than 200,000 people have been killed or abducted since the government declared war on organized crime in 2006.

IAF attacked targets in the Sinai Peninsula Sunday evening in retaliation for 2 rockets fired from there into Israel hours earlier, according a report today in the London-based newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed. The Islamic State in Sinai took responsibility for the shooting. One of the rockets exploded in open space in the Eshkol Regional Council near Gaza and was located following the IDF's searches. The report quotes tribal factions from the area claiming that Israeli jets were seen flying in the skies shortly after the launches. A video filmed in the Gaza region which has recently surfaced purports to show the rockets being launched. According to the report, the IAF jets appeared only once the Egyptian air force completed its own strikes in the areas of Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid in northern Sinai.

The death toll from Saturday's truck bombing in Somalia's capital is now over 300, the director of an ambulance service said Monday, as the country reeled from the deadliest single attack it's ever experienced.

Dr. Abdulkadir Adam of Aamin Ambulance service said more people had died of their wounds in the past few hours.

Funerals began, and the death toll was expected to rise again.

Saturday's truck bombing targeted a crowded street in Mogadishu, and about 300 others were injured. Somalia's government is blaming the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab extremist group, which has not commented.

Officials said more than 70 critically injured people were being airlifted to Turkey for treatment on Monday as international aid began to arrive.

Nervous relatives stood on the tarmac at the airport, praying for the recovery of their loved ones.

Overwhelmed hospitals in Mogadishu were struggling to assist other badly wounded victims, many burned beyond recognition.

ISIS is reported to have taken 400 civilians as 'human shields' as they prepare to leave their stronghold of Raqqa in Syria. Jihadist Islamic State militants are said to be 'hours away' from a crushing defeat - but they are reportedly attempting to use the civilians as a bargaining tool. The U.S.-led coalition however said it wanted the unconditional surrender of all IS militants in Raqqa. Its spokesman said around 100 jihadist fighters had surrendered in Raqqa in the last 24 hours and had been "removed from the city", and it still expected difficult fighting "in the days ahead". YPG officials said the Syrian city could be cleared of jihadists by tomorrow at the latest following a major offensive launched in June to oust the extremists.

The Trump administration is claiming that they worked with Pakistan to free the family.

MSNBC’s Hans Nichols reported Thursday that President Trump’s administration had secured the release of an American family held captive by the Taliban.

“We just heard, moments ago, from President Donald Trump claiming credit, saying that the United States government, working with the Pakistani government, secured the release of this family,” Nichols said.

The American family has been handed over to U.S. authorities and ready to head home.

However, Nichols said that it was not clear how Pakistan was involved in the release, given many Trump administration officials’ distrust of the country.

Trump is making a habit of securing the release of U.S. hostages. In April, the president convinced Egypt to release American aid worker Aya Hijazi.

His administration also brought home student Otto Warmbier from North Korea, before he tragically died.

It was the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

The gunman , identified as Stephen Craig Paddock, a 64-year-old retiree from Mesquite, Nevada, had as many as 10 guns with him, including rifles, they said.

Asked about the motive for the attack, Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said: "I can't get into the mind of a psychopath at this point."

Last Week Turkish, This Week Iranian Tanks and Military Equipment Are Preparing to Invade on the Kurdish Portion of Iraq Ahead of the Independence Vote

Iran deployed a dozen tanks supported by artillery at its border with Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region on Monday, a Kurdish official said, adding that the move was a dangerous escalation in the crisis triggered by Iraqi Kurdistan’s independence vote.

“The tanks can be seen from the Kurdish side,” an official from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) security council told Reuters, adding that the move was a “dangerous escalation.”

Iraq’s Kurds overwhelmingly voted for independence in a referendum held one week ago, defying the central government in Baghdad as well as neighboring Turkey and Iran, which fear Kurdish separatism within their own borders.

The deployment at the Parviz Khan border point on Monday was part of joint military drills conducted by the Iranian and the Iraqi armed forces in response to the referendum, state media in Tehran said. The exercises began last Sunday, according to Iran’s Mehr news agency.

The KRG says it plans to use the referendum’s result as a mandate to negotiate the peaceful secession of the Kurdish region through talks with Baghdad.

KRG President Masoud Barzani said on Monday it was legitimate to hold the vote in the Kurdish areas, including in the multi-ethnic oil city of Kirkuk, also claimed by Baghdad.

“Kirkuk is a Kurdistani city which should become an example for the coexistence of nations and religions,” he said during a visit to Kirkuk.

A suspect who allegedly attacked a police officer with a knife and later drove a U-Haul truck into pedestrians in Edmonton, Alberta is being investigated for "acts of terrorism," police in the Canadian city said early Sunday.

The 30-year-old man was detained after a high-speed chase through streets filled with Saturday night revellers and local football fans.

Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht told reporters that the suspect was in custody and they think he acted alone, but they aren't ruling out the possibility that others were involved.

An apparent ISIS flag was seized from the passenger seat of the truck, he confimed.

“We believe the individual acted alone," Knecht said. He confirmed that an ISIS flag was seized from the vehicle initially connected with the attack on the police officer.

The chaos began outside the Edmonton Eskimos football game at Commonwealth Stadium at 8 p.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) Saturday when police say a vehicle rammed a traffic control barricade and sent an officer flying into the air.

Knecht says the driver of the vehicle then got out and “viciously” stabbed the officer several times with a knife before fleeing.

The officer was taken to hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries.

At around midnight, a U-Haul van was stopped at an impaired driving stop north of downtown and the driver sped off with police in pursuit, Knecht said.

The U-Haul hit and injured four pedestrians before it flipped over. Their condition was not immediately known.

Knecht said the apparent ISIS flag would be "part of the investigation," adding that there had been no prior warning of a specific attack.

Police said at least 50 people were detained Saturday during a right-wing demonstration in Sweden’s second-largest city that left one police officer and several others injured.

The rally by the Nordic Resistance Movement in Goteborg, 400 kilometers (248 miles) southwest of Stockholm, featured an estimated 600 people marching in formation in all-black outfits. Some wore helmets and held shields, while others hoisted the movement’s green-and-white flags.

Police had posted flyers before the event warning people not to act in a way reminiscent of German Nazis demonstrations in the 1930s and 1940s.

NMR, which promotes an openly anti-Semitic doctrine, originally sought to pass near a downtown synagogue during the march, which coincided with Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day of the year. But Swedish courts intervened and shortened the route to less than one kilometer (0.6 mile.) The rally’s ending time also was shortened to avoid clashing with a nearby soccer game.

Counter-demonstrators threw fireworks and attempted several times to break police lines, allegedly to confront NMR members, who also tried to get past riot police. Several were detained on suspicion of rioting, police said.

“Stones, bottles and sticks were also thrown at us,” police spokesman Hans Lippens said.

Spanish police in riot gear smashed in the doors of polling stations and dragged protesters away by the hair, beating some with batons and firing rubber bullets at others on Sunday as they tried to shut down an illegal referendum on independence in Catalonia.

Despite the police brutality against largely peaceful demonstrations, voting began in many locations across northeast Spain at 9 a.m. The Catalan government said 73 percent of polling stations were open. Spain’s representative in the region, Enric Millo, said the vote had been “dismantled.”

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont said the crackdown had been an “unjustified, excessive and irresponsible use of violence.”

“It didn’t end Catalans’ desire to vote and decide freely about their future, but it has helped to answer all the questions we had to address today,” he said at a voting site near Girona that had been raided by the Civil Guard. “Today, the Spanish state lost.”

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy deployed thousands of police from outside Catalonia ahead of the vote to maintain public order, with the crisis already roiling his minority government.
