President Alexander Van der Bellen will soon be completing 100 days in office. To mark this ‘jubilee’ [Austrian broadcaster] ORF aired a report on Tuesday looking back at his tenure so far. In the course of the coverage a talk was broadcaster that took place in the ‘House of European Union’ – that clip is now causing uproar in the social media. [In that clip] President could be heard telling students that the day will come when we would have to tell all women to wear headscarf “out of solidarity”.
“It is the right of a women — do men wear headscarf? — to wear whatever they please. That’s what it think about it. And not just Muslim women. Every woman can wear a headscarf. And if it goes on like this, with rampant Islamophobia, a day will come when we will have to ask every women to wear a headscarf. Everyone, in solidarity with those, who do it for religious reasons,” explained the Austrian Head of the State.
