A 35-year-old man jailed earlier this year for a racist attack on a mosque has died in prison just two days after Christmas Day.

Prisoner Kevin Crehan was jailed in July following an attack on Jamia mosque in Totterdown, Bristol, died on Tuesday, according to prison service spokesperson.

The HMP Bristol inmate died while he was halfway through serving a 12 month prison sentence and an independent investigation has since been launched.

Crehan, of Springleaze, Knowle, was part of racist gang which attacked the mosque on 17 January.

The racist gang left rashers of bacon on the door handles of the mosque and placed bacon sandwiches on the doorstep.

CCTV footage emerged of the attack, which showed two men standing by the St George flag with ‘no mosques’ written on it. Crehan was sentenced by Bristol Crown Court on 20 July for the racially-aggravated public order offence alongside accomplices Mark Bennett, 48, Alison Bennett, 46, and Angelina Margaret Swales, 31.

Mark Bennett was handed a nine-month jail sentence, while Alison Bennett was given a six-month sentence and Swales was given a four-month sentence – both suspended for two years.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: ‘HMP Bristol prisoner Kevin Crehan died in custody on Tuesday 27 December.

‘As with all deaths in custody, the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.’
